Hidden Dangers of Light Up Shoes in a Classroom
As a teacher, I often witness the joy that light-up shoes bring to children. Their vibrant colors and dazzling lights make them a popular choice among students. Although these shoes may bring a level of socialization between a child and their peer, because of the characters that are on the shoes or simply the fact that they light up. Beneath this fun exterior lies a series of hidden dangers that should be addressed, especially within a classroom environment.
Distraction in the Classroom
One of the primary concerns regarding light-up shoes is the distraction they pose to both the wearer and their peers. When children walk or run, the shoes emit bright lights, which can easily divert attention from lessons and activities. This distraction not only affects the child wearing the shoes but can also disrupt the learning experience for others in the classroom. Teachers must constantly work to maintain focus, and these shoes can inadvertently undermine that effort. Last year I had a child who had light up shoes, but he also struggled with so attention issues. Many times, I would catch him tapping his shoes together to see them light up. This was good and bad because although it did help him stay focused at times it was a distraction to his peers.
Risks During Emergencies
Who remembers when you were a child in school? Every month or two we would have a fire drill and earthquake drill or tornado drill depending upon where in the country you lived. Unfortunately, for children who are going to school now vs who were going to school even ten or fifteen years ago are going to school in a different age. From "covid kids" which I will go into more detail in another post to living in a time where we have to think about the safety of our children in a whole different way.
Since 1999 when the Columbine shooting took place there have been over 400 school shootings. Because of this, schools have had to begin implementing lockdown drills as well as offsite drills, so children know what they have to do in case of an emergency. Many schools began implementing these drills around 2012 after the Sandy Hook shooting. Since then the statistics have been off the charts and the United States alone has seen a record number of school shootings on a yearly basis, something that children should not have to worry about.
Because of the increase of school shootings, One thing people need to take into consideration is if your child's classroom ever needs to go on lockdown. Will your child be safe if he or she is wearing light up shoes? The answer is no. Perhaps the most concerning aspect of light-up shoes in a classroom is their potential to compromise safety during emergencies. In a situation where children need to evacuate or hide quietly—such as during a lockdown—it is crucial for students to remain undetected. The bright lights that illuminate with movement can easily signal a child’s position to an outside threat. Additionally, any noise made by the squeaking action of the shoes can further compromise a child's safety.
Setting Guidelines for Classroom Attire
Given these concerns, it is essential for educators to establish clear guidelines regarding appropriate footwear in the classroom. Communicating the risks associated with light-up shoes can help parents make informed decisions about their children's attire. Moreover, incorporating discussions about responsible choices and the importance of discretion during emergencies will foster greater awareness among students.
What should children be wearing to school? While students attend school they should wear closed toed sneakers. These shoes should not have lights or any sort of reflectors on them that would be noticeable if a classroom were to have be locked down. As much as children may love showing off their favorite light up shoes, safety is the number one priority, and these should not be worn in a school setting.
While light-up shoes are undeniably fun and exciting for children, their potential to distract and compromise safety cannot be overlooked. As educators, we bear the responsibility of ensuring a conducive learning environment and the safety of our students. By taking action and setting guidelines, we can ensure that our classrooms remain places of focus, learning, and security.
